Artist Bio and Statement

BIOGRAPHY
I was born and raised in Boston, MA, and began drawing and painting at a very early age. I can remember entering town-wide coloring contests as a kid and winning everything from a picnic table to signed, first-edition comic books. In high-school my focus was more on music and I went on to attend Berklee College and received a 2-year Certificate of Music. I then switched my attention back to visual art and began exhibiting in many small businesses in and around Boston. I now call Lunenburg, MA home and create out of my home studio.

My collage work can be seen in the Cambridge Art Association's galleries, and in a year-long exhibit at my other alma mater Fitchburg State University in the Sanders Hall Alumni Gallery culminating this June 2022. I have my first solo museum show called Hypnagogia: Bridie Wolejko's Mixed Media Fantasies this Summer 2022 at the Fitchburg Art Museum. My work has also been published in numerous printed publications including the Paris Collage Collective's Surrealist Dreams book in conjunction with the Te Papa museum in New Zealand.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Studio Art from Fitchburg State University in 2020 and I am now enrolled in their Arts Education M.Ed. program with a goal of becoming a certified art teacher in the state of Massachusetts.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My collages are based on a variety of subject matter including fantasy, science fiction, folklore, nature, and the occult. My imagery is often familiar conjuring childhood nostalgia from bygone eras, yet it's uniquely part of its own world. Much of my work is intended to make viewers chuckle with a surreal spin on traditional fare. Other pieces have more serious messages related to environmental and humanitarian crisis's, but throughout all of my work, psychedelic undertones are hard to ignore. Collage pieces are sourced from vintage books and magazines and I often incorporate antique wallpaper samples and acrylic paint into my work giving it a mixed media quality.

In addition to collage, I create large and colorful acrylic paintings of various flora and fauna, animal anatomies, and scientific diagrams. In 2019 I completed 5 large scale murals for the city of Fitchburg as part of the Activate Mill Street Project, and I hope to continue large-scale public artmaking in the future.
